Susan Ullman, mixed media collage and handmade paper artist

Susan Ullman was born in Tennessee, but resided in New York City most of her life.  She traveled extensively and developed an appreciation of other ethnic groups and their art as it relates to their culture.

 

Ullman received an M.F.A. from Columbia University.  She also studied at the art students’ league where she became inspired by several well-known artists.  Among them were Matisse, Chagall, and Klee.  From an early age, the artist recalled having a love of handmade paper and collage effect.  Ullman also derived her inspiration from a deep desire to retain a sense of magic and fantasy within her life.

 

Ullman also had a background in dance.  She was also an accomplished ceramic artist, professional baker and a published poet.  She developed her own style of color, movement and magical imagery.

 

Her work has been exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally.  Her work has also appeared in museums and private corporate collections.  She had many solo exhibitions in prominent galleries in the New York area.

Susan died on May 2, 2021,  at Mt Sinai Hospital  in New York from heart complications. A live memorial was held at The Sanctuary, Roosevelt Island, Saturday June 19th to honor her life.
